About MARTYRS OF UGANDA PREP/ ST LWANGA J.H.S (MUPLS)
The idea to establish the Martyrs of Uganda School was conceived by the St Peter Cathedral Basilica Parish. The intention was to have a school comparable to the Christ the King School in Accra through which to inculcate sound Catholic principles in pupils in their formative years.
The School was to be sited at the premises of the Cathedral but there was no space so the then Bishop offered the Parish a piece of land at the Opoku Ware School (OWASS). The Bishop invited the Immaculate Heart of Mary Sisters from Nigeria to partner with the Parish to run the School. Sisters, Bonaventure Aniagolu and Colette Obiekwe were the pioneer staff of the School, arriving in Kumasi in September, 1976. At this time, the classroom block was not ready and so Sr. Bonaventure was sent to the Christ the King School to understudy its operations and systems. Sr. Colette Obika was sent to a school at Atasemanso to get familiar with the school system in Ghana.
In November of 1976, when the school block was ready, the pioneer class of twenty-four (24) pupils was enrolled with Mrs. Agatha Asamoah as the Attendant. The School was named Martyrs of Uganda to commemorate the martyrdom of the group of Ugandans in the 20th Century. By dint of hard work, the population of the School grew in leaps and bounds to become one of the leading preparatory schools in Kumasi. Forty (40) years later, the St Lwanga JHS was established in 2016 to make room for products of the primary school for their Junior High School education. St. Lwanga was the catechist-leader of the Martyrs of Uganda and so the JHS was named after him with Sir Dave Anane Druye as the first Headmaster.
Philosophy of the Name
There is so much to a name, particularly in the African context. A name is, therefore, carefully chosen for philosophical and symbolic reasons. A lot of reflection went into choosing a name for the School, eventually, settling on Martyrs of Uganda, after the Ugandan Christians who suffered death because of their ardent faith in Jesus Christ. The heroic life of those Christians was expected to inspire the children of the new school to be courageous always by living good lives.
